About UsOur CompanyThe Georgia Water & Wastewater Institute (GWWI) is a subsidiary of the Georgia Association of Water Professionals (GAWP) dedicated to improving water professional ability through training. Since 1970, talented instructors at GWWI have been meeting the needs of our students looking to further their water professional careers. Our Water/Wastewater Certification Board approved training courses help individuals attain certification in operational aspects of drinking water treatment & distribution, wastewater collection & treatment, and laboratory analysis. Our facilities in Carrollton offer the best hands-on instructional experience ensuring success for all water professionals. GWWI & GAWP also administer the Georgia Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Certification program through a contract with the Georgia EPD. Water professionals working in asset management can take advantage of our nationally recognized Maintenance Technologist certification program. GWWI is a member of the Association of Boards of Certification and works with several strategic partners in providing top-notch training materials including American Water Works Association, Water Environment Federation, and EPA Office of Water Programs. GWWI is dedicated to improving professional ability through high-quality training.HistoryThe Georgia Water and Wastewater Institute (GWWI) was founded by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division in 1974 in Americus, Georgia to provide an ongoing training program for water and wastewater treatment plant operators and laboratory analysts. The Institute was moved to temporary facilities on the campus of West Georgia College (now the State University of West Georgia) in Carrollton, Georgia in 1976. A new training facility was constructed on the banks of the Little Tallapoosa River in Carrollton, Georgia in 1980, which became the home of the Georgia Water and Wastewater Institute. the Georgia Water and Pollution Control Association(Now the Georgia Association of Water Professional) assumed responsibility for management of the Institute under a contract with the Georgia Environmental Protection Division in 1989, and continues to own and operate the Institute today. The training activities have been expanded to include backflow prevention/cross-connection control, collection and distribution system operation and maintenance, management, and related issues. Ownership of the training building which houses GWWI was transferred from Georgia Environmental Protection Division to the City of Carrollton in 1996. the City of Carrollton has joined with the Georgia Water and Pollution Control (now Georgia Association of Water Professionals) to upgrade the Georgia Water and Wastewater Institute training facility to better serve Georgia's water and wastewater professionals. the Board of Directors of the Georgia Water and Wastewater Institute and the Georgia Water and Pollution Control (now Georgia Association of Water Professionals) recognize the City of Carrollton for it's contributions to the success of the "new" Georgia Water and Wastewater Institute. In January of 1999, the Board of Directors of GWWI re-evaluated the operations and management of the Institute and elected to make several changes. The most significant was redirecting the management of the Institute which was placed under the supervision of the Executive Director of the Georgia Association of Water Professionals. GWWI has also undergone other remarkable changes including building renovations, staff enhancements, and course curriculum updating.
